Join our Early Years Programme to give your children the perfect start to their education

If you have children aged 3-5 then Oakwood Early Years is a great place for them.

Oakwood Early Years was set up in September 2008 as an extension to Oakwood Primary School, a DCSF- registered independent Islamic faith school.  We offer a high standard of education for 3 to 5 year olds, within a safe and stimulating environment.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for 0-5 year olds set by the DCSF is taught by qualified and experienced staff in a cheerful and nurturing setting.  Children also have an experienced visiting teacher during the week for Religious Studies on Arabic, Qur’an and Islamic Studies.

The Early Years Curriculum is delivered by adult led activities and child initiated play.  The six areas of learning and development covered are:

Personal, social and emotional development
Communication, language and literacy
Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
Knowledge and understanding of the world
Physical development
Creative development

Weekly planning meetings by the team ensure that the delivery of the curriculum is creative, varied and inspiring for the children.  Observations on the children’s development are ongoing and regular updates to the children’s assessment folders are carried out.

Smaller key-worker groups are set up for part of each session, so that a greater understanding and personal relationship is developed between one named adult and the children in the group.

The Nursery is in one large bright and cheerful room designed to encourage children to use the six areas of learning and development.  The Nursery surroundings are regularly changed with a rotation of resources to maintain a fresh and inspiring environment for the children.  There is access to a large outdoor play area with many resources available to improvement physical development.

The Reception class is in a classroom, set up for both learning through play and more structured educational activities. Reception children have weekly visits to the school library and the ICT room.  Reception children do more focused activities during their Numeracy and Literacy hours, the aim being to fully prepare them for entry into formal education in Year One of primary school.

Many external agencies are invited to visit the children e.g. Fire Service, Police, Paramedics, calligraphy artists, library story-tellers.  The children are also taken regularly on visits to the local park, the Discovery Centre, local library and others.  Visiting pets are brought in for the children to experience as well as our annual project of hatching chicks at school.  All children are offered horse-riding sessions twice a term.

Oakwood Primary School is committed to safer recruitment and safeguarding children; their health and welfare.
